ANJUNA, OUR FIRST STOP IN GOA – Western India

Like many of us, you might have heard that the experience in Goa is unique compared to all the other regions in India. The peak tourist season to visit Goa is between October and January, while some people travel to Goa to party hard on the sandy beaches others prefer to roam into the jungles and explore its rivers and enjoy some of its best-hidden gems.

As we read and were told by locals, the clear majority of Goa’s population identify themselves as Catholic, that’s one of the main reasons that make Goa a heavily visited and unique tourist destination in December flying from all over the world to celebrate Christmas and take part in the island fabulous festive traditions which makes it unlike anywhere else in India during that time of the year. While that is true and tempting, we thought that Christmas is preferably celebrated with the family besides the fact that accommodation prices skyrocket during high season. So, we held our horses and postponed this trip to our Easter vacation.

On April 13, 2014, Chantal (my lovely wife), Ronnie my cousin and buddy, and I set on a journey to explore Goa, India. After a total of 12 hours departing from Lebanon via Abu Dhabi, we reached the heavily packed airport of Mumbai. From Mumbai, we took an internal connecting 1-hour flight from Mumbai to Goa. After finding our way out of the airport, we took some type of a minivan who dropped us off at our accommodation in Anjuna after a long 45 km (27.9 miles) ride that took almost 1.5 hours. This time we had our booking done in advance using booking.com

Anjuna hosts its famous flea market and that was the main reason Chantal insisted to make our first stop there. What (she) we hadn’t paid attention to was that the market is open only on Wednesdays during the day and on Saturdays during the night. The day we arrived was on Monday!

“Flea Market, We’ll be back”

Plan B: we rented two scooters and we wandered in Anjuna, through its narrow roads and unexpected turns, we rode across vast fields of crops (probably fields of rice) until we reached the beach where we had our first beer at a beach shack.

During that time of the year, the beaches of Anjuna were almost deserted due to periodical strong wind blowing from the sea. Well, that suited us well. It gave us the feeling as if we owned the island.
