10 THINGS TO SEE IN JORDAN

2.Wadi Rum:

Who doesn’t know the orange sands of the movie “the Martian”? Don’t tell me that you thought this was actually filmed on Mars?! Well, the movie was actually filmed in Wadi Rum also known as the Valley of the Moon. Wadi Rum is the largest Wadi (Valley in Arabic) in Jordan, 720 km2 (278 mi2) with an elevation of 1,750m (5,741 ft). Depending on how much time you have, you can pass by Wadi Rum and see its panoramic view, hike the sands to the Nabataean Temple and Lawrence’s Spring, sightseeing in the many sights available in Wadi Rum, take a 4×4 tour in the valley or sleep in one of the traditional Wadi Rum camps where you would spend a Bedouin night, around the fire, listening to Bedouin music, Bedouin stories, enjoying Bedouin food and finally sleeping the Bedouin way. This Bedouin experience is not to miss especially if you can spend the night in Wadi Rum.

Wadi Rum Recommendations:

  • Wadi Rum is around 4 hours South of Amman, if you plan on passing by the Dead Sea on your way to Wadi Rum, then it will take you around 5 hours and a half (without stops) to get to Wadi Rum.
  • No matter how much time you have in Wadi Rum, we recommend that you try to be there during sunset so you can enjoy the captivating variations of orange.
  • If you end up sleeping in Wadi Rum, make sure to get additional cloth for the evening since the desert is known for its hot days and cold (sometimes freezing) nights.
  • If you plan on hiking or going on a 4X4 tour, we recommend that you carry a face masks or a piece of cloth that you can wrap around your mouth and nose to prevent sand from getting in your mouth and nose. Or just buy a Bedouin head wrap as a souvenir and wear it wether you are walking or sitting at the back of a pick up while being transported to a camp inside the desert.
  • As everywhere else in Jordan, a hat, sunscreen, water and comfortable shoes are a must.
