10 THINGS TO SEE IN JORDAN

4.Aqaba:

Aqaba, located southern Jordan on the northern tip of the Red Sea, is the only coastal city in the country. The city is 375 km2 (144.8 mi2) and is known for its vibrant trade due to the port of Aqaba and tourism around the Red Sea. Even though Aqaba is a popular holiday destination, it has still preserved the relaxed small-town atmosphere. Getting around the city is easy, you can discover it by foot or by taxi. If you are a fan of culture and ancient art, visit the Aqaba fort and Aqaba museum. Take a boat tour, and even better go scuba diving at Tala Bay Beach. Aqaba has some of the best untouched underwater sites worth more than a dive. If you are seeking coral reefs and you don’t know anything about diving, snorkeling could be the closest experience which you can enjoy while spending some time at the beach. Visit Ayala’s ancient church (excavated in 1998 and discovered to be the world’s oldest-known Christian church) and walk around the Aqaba market to buy some local souvenirs and spices.

Aqaba Recommendations:

  • Aqaba is four hours South of Amman.
  • Aqaba is mostly swimmable all around the year, it gets a bit colder in the winter, yet if you can bear some cold weather, then you can enjoy it anytime of the year.
  • The best thing about Aqaba is discovering the Red Sea with its coral reefs, if you do not snorkel or scuba dive, you will miss out a lot.
  • If you are a scuba diver; there are around 12 diving sites in Aqaba, we were lucky to have had time to dive on two sites. We went scuba diving with Sindbad Dive Center (http://sindbadjo.com/home.aspx) on Benerice Beach. We started our first dive right at the beach until we reached a depth of 20 meters . The next dive was a bit further into the sea; we took the boat and explored the “Japanese Gardens”. Sindbad team was very professional and we enjoyed our dive.
