10 THINGS TO SEE IN JORDAN

5.The Baptism Site:

The Baptism Site (Al-Maghtas in Arabic or Bethany Beyond the Jordan) is the original location of the baptism of Jesus, the ministry of John the Baptist where he preached, where the first five apostles met and where the Christian faith was founded. It is an archeological World Heritage site in Jordan where the Jordan River passes. When you reach the site, there is a shuttle bus that leaves every 30 minutes. The shuttle will take you on a tour to see Tell Elias, a ruin, where Elijah is said to have ascended from heaven, then will take you to the Spring of John the Baptist where you will explore it by foot, then to the Site of Jesus’ Baptism where there are three churches that remain. At the end of your tour, you will see a part of the Jordan River.

The Baptism Site Recommendations:

  • The Baptism Site is around one hour South West of Amman.
  • The site is very close to the Dead Sea and you can plan on visiting both together, either on the same day, or if you plan on sleeping in the Dead Sea, you can see the site on your way.
  • During the spring and summer, it will be very hot, so get a hat, sunscreen and water. There will also be a lot of flies, so if you are bothered by them, get a flies repellant
  • You can only find a toilet at the entrance of the site, so plan your toilet visits accordingly.
