10 THINGS TO SEE IN JORDAN

6.Umm Qays (Gadara):

Located Norther Jordan, Umm Qays is a town close to the ruins of Ajloun. It’s is residing on a hilltop 378 meters (1,240 ft) above sea level overseeing the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias), the Golan Heights, Mt. Hermon and the Yarmouk River gorge. According to the Bible, Jesus performed one of his greatest miracles in Umm Qays where he casted demons from two men into a herd of pigs. When visiting Umm Qays, you can visit the museum as well as the ruins that have more than eight interesting sights. There are two restaurants around, the most famous one is the Umm Qays Resthouse currently operated by Romero Restaurant. We visited this restaurant in Aqaba, where it overlooked the Red Sea and in Umm Qays, it overlooks the amazing view earlier mentioned.

Recommendations for Umm Qays:

  • Driving from Amman, it will take around two hours and a half to reach Umm Qays depending on the road taken.
  • You can see Umm Qays, Jerash and Ajloun Castle in one-day trip from Amman if you don’t mind packing everything together and starting your day very early and ending it very late. The whole road will take around three hours one way, yet you will be stopping to see the different sites. Umm Qays is the furthest, so you can end you day and enjoy the sunset there then drive back in the evening when everyone is almost asleep.
  • Be sure to wear a hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes for your walk.
  • It is better to ask for an official guide who can show you around and tell about its history.
